Creating electric vehicle charging networks that allow travellers the ability to drive to communities across Canada is incredibly important.
Traveling through the prairies where electric travel infrastructure is limited finding a place to stay that offers ev charging can be a godsend.
The Hampton Inn & Suites in Medicine Hat is one of those saviours for electric vehicles travelling in Alberta. The hotel has both a Tesla charger and a level 2 charger.
The Hampton Inns are a division of the Hilton hotel chain. The chain is installing electric charging stations in many of their facilities in both Canada and United States to accommodate the emerging market of electric vehicle tourism.
We met with Tyler Johnson, the Acting General Manager of the Medicine Hat hotel and he gave us an overview of the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton sustainability initiatives.
The hotel others in the chain has a look and design that is a common brand look of Hilton Hotels. The hotels have incorporated sustainable elements into the design and operation of the hotels.
Tyler explained that the hotel recycles soap. Since 2011, more than 1,600 hotels have recycled over 1,000,000 pounds of used soap that has made over 5,000,000 bars of soap with Clean the World.
The pool is saline-based to reduce chemicals. The hotel uses greener cleaning products to reduce toxins.
The hotel recycles plastics, cardboard and paper although recycling receptacles are not visible, Tyler explained that housekeeping does separate the materials for recycling. The hotel does not currently have a composting program but the Hilton chain has a number of facilities that have on-site composting programs in the United States.
The hotel operation has been designed to be the economic brand for the chain. This does mean that products like disposable cups and disposable plastic glasses and cutlery are part of the corporate presentation. Perhaps since these materials add to the waste stream and operational costs, the corporate office will make changes to its corporate sustainability policy for these products.
The hotels do use materials with recycled content in furniture and building materials. The gardens are designed with draught tolerant plantings.
The hotel is clean, attractive with a helpful staff. A plus for us is that they are a dog-friendly hotel as well.

Ps if you see an ice vehicle in the EV spot, to save the spot for EV driving guests, Tyler parks his car there because it is easier to move his vehicle that to hunt for other visitors using spot.
